It has been reported that there were around 1,500 cases of the virus, including around 5,000 in the UK alone, according to the BBC.
However, it was not clear if this was the case across the UK, nor how many people are affected by the virus in the country.
A spokesperson for Microsoft, who did not want to be named for security reasons, told the BBC that Microsoft was “working closely with the authorities in response to this issue”.
“We are taking the threat of this virus very seriously and we are working with law enforcement and our partners around the world to identify and help the affected affected,” he said.
“We have been working closely with law enforcements and organisations around the globe to help protect our users from this virus and we remain committed to doing so.”

“Earlier this month, the UK Department of Health said that around 3,000 people were infected with the virus after the NHS NHS Trust in England was shut down by the health service on Monday.
The trust, which has been running for two weeks, had been using NHS Computing services to help people with health problems get online.
But as the trust shut down, users had to log in using their NHS username and password to access the services.
This was not the first time that the NHS has been hit by a virus, with around 1.4 million infections being reported across the country in November last year.
It is also not the only healthcare system to be hit with a virus.
In September, the NHS was hit with another ransomware attack, which forced some users to log on using their login details.
